Starting a job search process can bring up many thoughts and emotions. For some, it can feel exhilarating and open up the possibility of new things for the future; while for others, it can create feelings of concern and exhaustion. It’s important to remember that whatever is coming up for you, your feelings are valid. This Jobseekers Newsletter, from Impact Search Advisors by Nonprofit HR, was created to support your career search experience and our goal is to help you identify and move toward your next mission-driven opportunity!
When that moment hits and you know you’re ready for your next career move, remember to give yourself a moment to envision the future and plan. When it comes to social impact careers, the most essential thing to consider is your “why” for work. Knowing your purpose can help you ensure that your next step is in alignment with your personal values. You can support yourself in this process through practicing self-care and remaining optimistic that there is a great career opportunity waiting for you on the other side of your search process.
If you find yourself getting stressed out or feeling overwhelmed during your job search, or notice yourself having thoughts like “there isn’t enough time,” try another approach. Pause and recall your “why” and allow that focus to help shape your timeline and guide you to be intentional in each action you take.
Continue to relax throughout your process and to remind yourself that the perfect opportunity is waiting for you. This focus will help you to see clearly what to prioritize and which things are less important to accomplish immediately.
Need to revamp that resume? Your recruiter will likely be looking at your resume and giving you some feedback. Here are three tips to help to prepare your resume and get it to the top of the pile for the hiring manager at your ideal organization.
“When you are searching for your next job, really focus on what organizations are saying they need, i.e. the requirements, skills and experience of the role. If an employer wants a candidate who has certain software skills, by all means, mention that software in your resume (if indeed you know the software)! If an employer is looking for an exceptional project manager with customer service skills and budget experience, make mention of all those keywords—project management, customer service and budget. Don’t cut and paste, but show that you understand the requirements of the position and have the applicable experience. Make yourself look like the perfect candidate on paper. This will greatly increase your chance of getting interviews.”

“To me, what is unique about this is the opportunity to connect work that I’m very passionate about, specifically improving outcomes for girls and women, and being able to do that in a way that is more tangible than serving in a classroom role or a principal role. In other words, really being able to develop programming and donations and to elevate the mission of the work in a different kind of way.”
